About vaginal delivery after a previous cesarean

CPT 59610 is the obstetric global package for a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC): routine prenatal care, the vaginal delivery and postpartum care. It is billed by the obstetrician as one code; a hospital's listed price usually reflects a hospital-employed practice's package.

What the price covers, and what it does not

Prenatal visits, the delivery and postpartum follow-up by the clinician. Not included: the hospital stay (DRG 807 for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery), anesthesia, ultrasounds, laboratory tests, newborn care by the pediatrician, or the cesarean if the VBAC attempt is converted (59618 in that case). Not every hospital offers VBAC; those that do must have surgical staff immediately available, which is one reason the hospital stay may be priced higher.

Why prices vary

Practice packages differ, and hospital stay prices vary two to three times between hospitals. Ask specifically what happens to the price if the labor ends in a cesarean.
