What to say on the phone

"I'd like the self-pay price for CPT 95810, in writing, and whether it covers facility, physician and anesthesia."

About sleep study (overnight, attended)

CPT 95810 is an overnight polysomnography in a sleep laboratory with a technologist present: sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm, brain activity and movement to diagnose sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. It is the traditional gold standard test, though home sleep tests (95806) have replaced it for many straightforward apnea cases.

What the price covers

The hospital's price is the technical fee for the sleep laboratory, the technologist and the recording equipment. The sleep physician's interpretation is billed separately. If CPAP is started during the same night (a split-night study, 95811), the code and price change.

Why prices vary

Attended sleep studies are among the most expensive routine diagnostic tests at hospitals, and prices vary several times within one area. Independent sleep centers are usually cheaper, and a home sleep test, when appropriate, costs a fraction of an in-lab study.

Questions to ask
