CPT 84153 is a total PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test, used to screen for and monitor prostate cancer and to follow prostate enlargement. It is a single blood test, usually ordered with a routine physical for men from around age 50, or earlier with family history.

What the price covers

The laboratory analysis only. The blood draw is a separate small charge. A "free PSA" test (84154) is a different code sometimes ordered alongside it.

Why prices vary

A PSA test costs a laboratory a few dollars. Hospital cash prices range from under $20 to several hundred dollars for the same test. Independent laboratories and direct-to-consumer lab services are usually the cheapest route; results are equivalent.
