About ct scan of the abdomen and pelvis, with contrast

CPT 74177 is a CT of the abdomen and pelvis with intravenous contrast, scanned in one pass. It is the workhorse of emergency and outpatient imaging: appendicitis, kidney stones with infection, unexplained abdominal pain, cancer staging and follow-up. It takes about 10 minutes plus preparation.

What the price covers

The hospital's price is the technical fee for the scanner, technologist, IV contrast and room. The radiologist's reading is billed separately. Oral contrast, if used, may be a separate line. If the scan is done in the emergency department, ED facility charges are added on top.

Why prices vary

This is one of the most expensive routine scans and one of the most variable. Hospital main campuses often list several times what their own outpatient imaging centers list, and freestanding imaging centers are cheaper still. Cash prices at hospitals are often below the insurer-negotiated rate.
